Allowed and prohibited items

What Can and Can't Go in Your Dumpster

Short answer

You can put most non-hazardous waste in an Around Town roll-off dumpster, including household junk, furniture, construction and renovation debris, and yard waste. You cannot put in hazardous materials, paints and chemicals, batteries, tires, electronics, appliances with refrigerant, or fuels. Ask before loading large amounts of concrete, brick or dirt.

01

Allowed items

Household junk

Furniture (couches, tables, chairs), household items like toys, clothing and linens, and small appliances without refrigerant (microwaves, toasters, ovens).

Construction and renovation debris

Drywall, wood, siding, flooring, roofing shingles and tiles, cabinets, countertops, fixtures, windows and non-treated glass.

Yard waste

Branches, shrubs, leaves, grass clippings, and small trees or brush cut down to fit inside the container.

Other non-hazardous debris

Cardboard and paper, non-toxic plastics and metals, empty rinsed-out containers.

02

Prohibited items

Hazardous materials

Paints, solvents and stains (unless completely dried out), asbestos-containing materials, medical waste, pesticides, herbicides and cleaning chemicals.

Electronics and refrigerant appliances

Refrigerators, freezers and AC units, TVs, computer monitors and other e-waste.

Tires and vehicle parts

Tires, batteries, engines and fuel tanks.

Flammable items

Gasoline, propane tanks, motor oil and other fuels.

03

Heavy materials: ask first

Small amounts of concrete, brick, tile or dirt are fine, but these materials are dense and can go over the weight allowance long before the dumpster looks full. Call us before your project so we can recommend the right setup.

04

How to get rid of prohibited items

  • Household hazardous waste: city drop-off sites and collection events usually take paint, chemicals and batteries.
  • Electronics: e-waste recycling centers handle TVs, computers and monitors.
  • Tires, oil and car batteries: many tire shops and auto shops accept them.
  • Metal and appliances: scrap yards often take old appliances and metal parts.

Loading tips that save space and money

  1. Sort a "can" pile and a "can't" pile before the dumpster arrives.
  2. Break down furniture, flatten boxes and cut branches to size.
  3. Put flat items on the bottom and bulky items on top to avoid air pockets.
  4. Keep the load level with the top of the container.
  5. Ask about the weight allowance if you expect heavy debris.
